Day 15 - Fort Point @ Greenwich Island and Half Moon Island

Sunday, March 8, 2020

Morning: We landed in the mist at Fort Point on Greenwich Island. A cliff nearby was teeming with Chinstrap penguins and we spotted a single Macaroni penguin among them. The double beach was full of fur seals. We walked to the end of the beach, which was bordered by a glacier. The shore was scattered with spectacular, transparent pieces of ice.

Afternoon: We landed at Half Moon Island, with clear views of the towering mountains of Livingston Island. On the beach, we saw a whalers’ boat estimated to be about 200 years old. We walked through several Chinstrap penguin colonies and once again spotted one or two Macaroni penguins. The area was full of fur seals, and we also saw a Weddell seal. There is an Argentinian base on the island, but it is only minimally maintained and not regularly used. Toward the end of the visit, we walked across a flat beach area with spectacular views all around.
